Addressing Some Concerns

Concerns addressed :new:

Alright, some concerns have been raised about the contest we recently ran. I'll attempt to address them here.

After I (=Barastol) attended the devmeet for the ~newfoundland group, I thought it would be cool to sponsor a contest for newfoundland deviations. I brought up the idea to =northernmist and she suggested I run it through the group, and after it started I was invited to come on as co-admin, and help with the contest, and other group things.

My original idea for the contest never changed, I wanted to have the community choose one winner, and I would pick my favorite as the other winner. =northernmist asked me if she could enter, and since she was not running the contest, or directly picking winners I thought it would be a good idea.

We're not that big a group, and can't see excluding people from the contest for frivolous reasons. This was our first contest, and we just kind of played it by ear. All throughout the contest people had ample opportunity to raise concerns or bring forward suggestions, and we still welcome them now.

It just seems a little silly to complain that the personal favourite choice of an individual wasn't your image. That particular image happened to be very well executed and really reminded me of growing up in costal Newfoundland. I went with my gut, not because I wanted a particular person to have the prize. I am not concerned if 1000 other photographers have taken similar shots, they never entered this contest.

We will have to formalize our contest policy before we start the next contest, but I see nothing wrong with how this was done.

I think the next contest will be along the lines of a DevID or something related. This will be 100% community voted, we'll have to figure out if moderators can participate but not win prizes or just not enter. Any thoughts along these lines will be greatly appreciated.

I hope this addresses the concerns of the group members, there was no malice in a moderators participation.

Please bring any further concerns about the group and the running of it to us through notes, we'd prefer not to be maligned in a public forum before we get the chance to address anyone’s concerns.

Remember the group is first and foremost about bringing Newfoundland deviants together and having fun.

I agree with =Barastol's journal entry. Sorry for the confusion this has caused.
I would also like to give =Barastol the welcome into the Co-admin position of the ~newfoundland group that he deserves. He has been a big help. :thanks: Sorry for not having the time to do it sooner, that is why I needed the help of a Co-admin.

I agree 100%. There was nothing wrong with the way this contest was handled. I also don't see a problem with mods participating in a exclusively community voted contest. I also don't see a problem with a mod participating in a moderator judged contest as long as they are not the mod doing the judging (Ok that was a convoluted sentence, I know). As long as the provision that existed in the first contest is continued, that being the inability to vote for one's own deviation, then that would be ok. This of course makes sense since there would be a tie between all entries otherwise (or perhaps the majority). I mean how can a mod win if everyone votes for their fav and not their own, even if people are voting for their friends, it still doesn't tip the scale since having one's friends vote wouldn't guarantee a win. As for those who are paranoid enough to think the mods of :devnewfounland: wouldn't count the votes fairly, well... I guess you will just have to trust them, or not participate. Simple.

Looking forward to more contests.

Anyone should be able to enter, including the mods, because you just never know who may have the best submittion for the contest. Mods should be able to win prizes too.

I just want to jump right in here and .. be a complete sheep. I'm with =random-event on this one, and he put it much better than I could. The mods should be allowed to enter into the contests on the community. They're part of the community, afterall! Unless =northernmist and =Barastol really want to be Evil Overlords, that it, I mean, far be it for me to put a stop to their plans for world domination. :lmao:

I second the motion... err I fourth it!

One suspects teaching an old dog how to play dead would be a heck of a lot less challenging than getting a guy to do things that women want them to do.

I have no problem with moderators entering...after all, the vote was put out to everyone so why can't everyone enter?

Welcome and good luck barastol!

Thanks for the kind welcome!

I'm sure I speak for the group when I say we hope that texas is spared the devestation wrought in Louisianna and other places, especially Austin.

We'll keep you in our thoughts and keep our fingers crossed for you.

Thanks =random-event We will make a set of guidelines for the contests, to clearly spell out the group policies, and by entering people will by default agree to these.

I've recently joined a few other groups, and I'm looking at their contest rules, and seeing which aspects we will use for ours.
